LLMD

Lyme-Literate Medical Doctor. An informal community term for healthcare providers with significant experience in Lyme disease diagnosis and treatment.

LLMD stands for Lyme-Literate Medical Doctor. It is an informal term coined by the Lyme disease patient community, not an official medical credential or board certification. It refers to healthcare providers who have substantial clinical experience with Lyme disease, tick-borne co-infections, and related complex illness.

LLMDs may be physicians (MD or DO), naturopathic doctors, nurse practitioners, or other licensed healthcare professionals. What distinguishes them from general practitioners is their depth of experience with the clinical complexity of Lyme disease, their familiarity with co-infections, and their willingness to evaluate and treat patients who may not fit standard diagnostic criteria.

Patients often seek LLMDs when standard care has not resolved their symptoms, when they suspect persistent or complex Lyme disease, or when they need a provider familiar with the full range of tick-borne illness.
