Chronic Lyme
An informal term for ongoing or persistent symptoms associated with Lyme disease infection, used by patients and some practitioners.
Chronic Lyme is an informal term used by patients and some healthcare providers to describe ongoing symptoms that persist or recur following Lyme disease infection, even after standard antibiotic treatment.
The term is not universally accepted in mainstream medicine. The CDC and major infectious disease organizations use the term Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) when referring to persistent symptoms after confirmed Lyme disease that has been treated with standard antibiotic therapy.
Despite the ongoing terminology debate, many patients experience real and significant ongoing symptoms that affect quality of life. Lyme-literate practitioners and functional medicine providers are often the most experienced in evaluating and managing patients with chronic Lyme presentations.
